The entry of SARS-CoV-2 into host cells is mediated by the trimeric transmembrane spike (S) glycoprotein. The S glycoprotein is surface-exposed and mediates entry into the host cells by binding to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor which makes the S glycoprotein a major target of neutralizing antibodies. Neutralizing antibodies blocking the S protein and receptor binding could prevent the virus from infecting host cells.
